2027 MICHIGAN SCHOOL COUNSELOR OF THE YEAR


Congratulations, Josh Smith!

Josh Smith is a school counselor at Western High School and has nearly 20 years of experience supporting students and families as a school counselor, licensed professional counselor, educator, and advocate. Since 2007, he has served as a School Counselor in the Western School District, with a focus on whole-child development, social-emotional learning, college and career readiness, and student support.

Beyond his work in schools, Josh owns a private counseling practice and has served as an adjunct professor at Spring Arbor University. His leadership has also included service on the MSCA Board, Michigan's Return to Learn Committee, and numerous county and state initiatives supporting student mental health and college access.

Throughout his career, Josh has been a passionate advocate for the academic, career, and social-emotional success of Michigan students. MSCA is proud to recognize Josh as the 2027 Michigan School Counselor of the Year.


About the Michigan School Counselor of the Year Award

The Michigan School Counselor of the Year Award celebrates excellence in school counseling and recognizes the important role school counselors play in the lives of Michigan students. Each year, MSCA honors a school counselor whose dedication, leadership, and commitment to students exemplify excellence in the profession. The selected recipient represents Michigan in the ASCA School Counselor of the Year program.


Who is Eligible?

The Michigan School Counselor of the Year Award recognizes outstanding school counselors who are leading comprehensive school counseling programs at the elementary, middle, or high school level.

Nominees must be members of the Michigan School Counselor Association (MSCA).
